7 Important Tips For Using Twitter

Nicolas Hantge asked:

Twitter has become the popular social networking tool every business and individual cannot live without. Not only has its popularity made it a necessity, the amount of business that can be conducted or accomplished through this social networking tool is reason enough to spend a little time out of each day to give updates and interact with your followers. Gathering of information, gaining website traffic and building business relationships are just a few ways you can use Twitter to your benefit. Here are a few tips to help ensure you are spending your time efficiently on Twitter for your benefit:

1. Use a different phone number.
Just like any good marketing campaign you need to be able to track your advertising efforts. For your Twitter account, you will want to use a different phone number that you are able to track phone calls each month similar to a print advertisement in a magazine, newspaper or direct mail piece. It is important that this phone number is only used for your Twitter account so you are able to see if the way you are reaching out to your followers is effective or not.

(Tip: Consider using a Kall8 phone number for your marketing effort such as Twitter. Kall8 allows you to forward different phone numbers to your main line without the inconvenience of having multiple phone lines)

2. Interact w/ Followers, Help out when Possible.
If there is one tendency on Twitter I have noticed it’s the power of reciprocity. I have gained a beneficial relationship almost every time with the followers that I interact with and help out when possible. It may only be one time where I have the opportunity to help a follower but I try to extend a helping hand when possible. When you notice someone asking a question, do your best to answer it. If someone is asking for feedback on a site they’ve just created, spend 30 seconds and check it out and give them an honest response. You will be surprised how far that will actually go. I have done both of the previous things I’ve mentioned several times and those who wrote the original tweet have helped promote one if not more of my tweets to their followers! If there is one thing to get out of this article its tweeters love interaction because it helps them feel like their communication is real. Reciprocity on Twitter will help make your tweeting efforts worthwhile.

3. Only have one Personality.
I have seen many companies have a Twitter account with multiple employees sharing the responsibilities of making the updates on the account. This is great production wise, however it has the negative effect of sending multiple messages. Just like I said earlier it is important to interact with your followers, this could cause confusion to your followers if you are coming across with different personalities. If you are in a conversation with someone through replies it would be difficult for someone else to know what you were talking about and couldn’t really answer accordingly. Make sure you only have one employee in charge of your Twitter account.

4. Follow for Interest not Popularity
Another thing to remember when using a Twitter account is to think about the traffic or followers you are targeting. I know we have all seen the user who has 10,357 followers but is following 10,309. This is a good indication that they are interested in using their Twitter account for marketing just as you are. Now if you can get that user to follow and promote you to their 10,000+ followers that is great but usually that isn’t the case.

To avoid reaching out to the wrong followers you need to write relevant and most importantly useful updates. This will help you gain followers who are truly interested in your services or products. The more “free” information you give away the more your followers become dependent on your tweets. What could be better than your followers licking their chops waiting for the next “interior painting tip” or “advantage to using the new Adobe (latest version)? Update with useful information and your followers will be more receptive.

5. Think about keywords for Search Engine Optimization (Twitter Optimization).
When you are writing your updates it is important to remember that Twitter has a search engine of everyone’s tweets. If someone is looking for information which you can provide, you want to make it is simple for them to find you and hopefully start following you. If you use keywords or highly used search terms about your services, latest news or whatever you might want to use to attract new followers, your updates will come up more in the search box on Twitter putting you in front of thousands of more individuals.

(EX. Instead of a short tweet like: Remember to use keywords in your Tweets to gain more followers, use: To gain more followers on Twitter its important to use keywords like SEO, Search Engine Optimization, Twitter Tips, Gain more followers)

6. Short URL’s
Another thing to keep in mind when writing your updates is to use small URL’s. This will allow you to write more information about the link you are posting as well as the people searching for your tweet. There are a few websites out there that allow you to turn your long URL into a shorter URL for purposes such as Twitter updates. I recommend checking out tinyurl.com which allows you to turn any lengthy URL into a “tiny URL” of only 25 characters. This is absolutely perfect for a Twitter update because you are still able to use the remaining 115 characters to describe your link.

7. Link to your profile.
Whenever you write a blog article, new content on your website, or build a new profile on another social networking site make sure you link to your Twitter profile page with “anchor text” of either your name or our company’s name. This way when someone Google’s your name or your company’s name, the Twitter account will come up as well.

Will Twitter Survive the Hype?

Alyssa Udall asked:

The extraordinary boom of Twitter’s users, popularity and publicity sparks many interesting questions. How many now frequent Tweeters knew about Twitter six months ago? I know I didn’t. Is there anyone on the Internet now that has not heard about Twitter? It seems impossible that a moderate Internet user would have been able to avoid the insane amount of conversation going on about the micro-blogging service. No one is immune to that amount of advertising. If there are some select individuals who in their daily Internet use have not at least heard the name Twitter in passing, I would like to congratulate them on having an incredibly impermeable personality… and I may even suggest using this gift to fight crime… somehow.

Having said this, I would now like to bring up an interesting corollary: MySpace. MySpace also experienced this crazy popularity surge a few years back. What has become of MySpace now? It has become a network devoid of adults and full of half-famous music groups. Can you imagine your mother on MySpace? Didn’t think so. MySpace is not a place for mothers. Why not? Sadly, MySpace now resembles an Internet dating site: it lacks substance and class.

What does the MySpace case tell us about the future of Twitter? Just like any fad, it will eventually fade away. Just like my favorite orange sandals I wore in elementary school, made of a jelly-like substance and aptly named “Jellies,” Twitter will eventually go out of style. How ridiculous would I look if I wore Jellies into the office tomorrow? My coworkers would most likely see my footwear, do a double-take, then whisper conspiratorially behind their hands to each other, “Jellies? Are your serious?! I bet she uses MySpace too.”

How soon will Twitter become a thing of the past? It’s too soon to tell. In order to prepare for this post-apocalyptic world of social media, TwiTip suggests making memorable connections with those you meet on Twitter, exchanging information and establishing relationships.

Marketing With Twitter the Right Way

Lucien Bechard asked:

Twitter is quickly becoming a phenomenon that’s changing the world as we know it. In an instant you can tell people all over the world what you are up to. If you are watching tv, hanging with friends, traveling the world, have a business to market, or just want to be your goofy self, Twitter is the place to make yourself known to millions of people. If you have a business or product you want to promote it’s important to follow some guidelines when you’re marketing with Twitter.

It’s important to put yourself in your followers shoes when you are tweeting. If you come across as being too pitchy or a spammer, you will not have success marketing with Twitter. The community will shut you out very quickly. It’s okay to regularly post about your business opportunity or product that you are promoting but make sure your tweets stay fresh, interesting, and provide value to your followers. If you post the same old tweets your followers will become uninterested and you will lose credibility.

When you’re marketing with Twitter don’t be too business orientated. Your followers will get tired of you very quickly if all you tweet is about business. Make sure you share about what’s going on in your life, be personable, share quotes that interest you, retweet what others have to say, but most of all be yourself. Don’t try to be someone your not.

Since Twitter will only let you share snippets at a time it’s important to keep your content interesting. Telling your followers you’re eating, watching tv, or going to bed will bore them after awhile. It’s okay to post this content but make sure you post more interesting Tweets as well.

When marketing with Twitter a good guideline to follow is 1 business tweet for every 3 tweets you post. So for every 3 content tweets you would post 1 business tweet. Only send out 5-6 tweets per day. If you follow these guidelines, your posts will stay fresh and your followers won’t think you are being a cheesy salesperson.

Make sure you post your Twitter link on your website, blog, email signatures, and social media websites. The more places you post your twitter link, the more followers you will get. Remember that the more followers you have, the more people will see your messages.

It’s very critical to avoid using automatic Twitter services that offer bulk followers, repeating the same tweets, mass tweeting, mass following, and sending out tweets automatically from Twitter automated sites. These are quick ways to get your account banned. There are some sites like Tweetlater, Buzzom, and Huitter that are legitimate sites. Just make sure that if you are going to use these kinds of sites, do your research on them first to make sure they are legitimate. Once your account gets banned with Twitter, it’s a nightmare trying to get it back and you’ll lose all of your followers.

Marketing with Twitter the right way is a great way to build credibility for you and your business. If you do it right Twitter can provide your business with a tremendous amount of leads. Remember to be always be yourself, be consistent, be interesting, follow the proper rules of engagement, and Twitter will be a tremendous marketing resource. Are you the next Twitter marketing rockstar? If so, prove it. Go out there and start tweeting!

How to Use LinkedIn For Your Business

Juanita Ecker asked:

Remember the old days when sending an email seemed high-tech? Now we’re all on Twitter (or at least I am), and using social networking sites to expand our business and connect with clients and colleagues.

One of my favorite online tools is LinkedIn. As an image consultant, it’s great for virtual networking-with the added bonus that I don’t have to wear heels or make small talk over canapĂ©s! What many people don’t realize though is that LinkedIn has more advanced features that can help you promote your services with just the few clicks of a mouse. Here’s how:

Create a profile. Think of your LinkedIn profile as an online resume. Even if you aren’t looking for a job, your skills and past work experience can help you make contacts with people in related areas. Add a photo and a link to your business site or blog, and always keep your information up-to-date.

Make friends. Invite fellow LinkedIn members from your email address book, whether it’s a former client or your accountant. Joining groups relevant to your interests can also maximize your experience. You never know where it might lead!

Add recommendations. Ask a few trusted colleagues-it should be someone you’ve actually had a positive working experience with-to kindly write a brief testimonial for your profile. You can return the favor!

Make postings. Do you blog regularly? Posting news items on your profile can establish yourself as an expert in your field. Look into linking your profile to your blog or Twitter feed. If you don’t blog, you should still aim to post an update at least once a week. It could be a special you’re offering, news of a project you’re working on, or a link to an interesting article-just keep it professional.

Get talking. Starting a discussion is another good way to make new contacts. LinkedIn’s Answers section lets you post a question for others to answer, or you can give your two cents on a pressing query (searchable by topic). You can also chat to fellow members by emailing them through the site (hit the contact button). If you don’t know the person well, you should introduce yourself and mention a connection in the first two sentences (ex: “I came across your LinkedIn profile and noticed that we’ve both worked for XYZ Inc.”).

Whether you’re job-hunting or simply looking to expand your business network, LinkedIn can be a wonderful resource. Just make sure you’re making the most of your experience!

You probably know about social networking sites, and may have used professional ones as well, but you may not know there are some out there that serve as both. What this means is that they can be a treasure trove of information on anyone who has a profile through such a place. Plaxo is one of the new breed of networking sites out there. When you want more about any old friend, or want to contact someone you used to work with, searching through Plaxo may be one of the smartest things you can do.

Plaxo has about 20 million users, and that number is growing. What is great about them is that they help members keep up with their friends and business contacts by sending out an alert when someone on their list has added or changed information. This means that you can connect with someone, and you can instantly be notified when or if they add a phone number to their profile. That can save you time with searching.

Take a tour through Plaxo to find out how they work, and then set up your own profile to get started with your search. You can add as little or as much as you want. That means if you care to, you can add contact information of your own, and fill out any form they offer. You can set it so that only those you befriend on the site have access, or you can leave it wide open. Plaxo will notify you when anyone on your list changes anything, so that is a good reason to leave your profile up, even when you have no intention of using it for anything else.

What is cool about Plaxo is that though it has their own twist on online networking, they still offer some of the things that users are used to having on other sites. This means you can search for someone by name, or by email address if you have that information. Use what you have to narrow down what you get with your search results. Use these searches until you have exhausted all options.

Once you find a phone number that you believe belongs to your old friend, classmate, or business associate, you may want to be sure it is the right one before you attempt to reach them. You can easily do this by looking for a reverse search that shows you who owns a phone number [http://www.whoownsthisphonenumber.com].

How to Use Twitter Properly

Peter Nisbet asked:

If you want to learn how to use Twitter properly you have three ways to go about it: teach yourself, get some free instructions online or pay for it. My son Tweets and he taught himself, but I had to teach him how to do it properly because he tried to teach himself. OK, he could do the basic, but who wants to be happy with the basics of something with the potential of Twitter.

You can get some free info online on how to use Twitter, but it’s all very basic and you don’t learn a great deal – not any more than anybody else. Me. I went the third way and never looked back. I decided to pay for it because I run a few online businesses and several websites, and wanted to know how I could promote these using Twitter without upsetting people. You can do the same.

I learned all the basic stuff that I already knew, but with a bit more besides, such as registration, how to make tweets and the like. Then I got to the stuff I really wanted to learn. Like how to get the right kind of followers for my business and how also to follow the right kind of people. None of this was difficult, and I should know because I do difficult. I write difficult stuff and help others to do difficult stuff, so when I say none of it was difficult I know what I mean.

Twitter is a wonderful medium in which you can let people know what you are up to and keep in touch with them if you want to. You can use it as a marketing medium if you wish, but most get a great deal of fun and satisfaction just by using it as a form of online SMS service. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and Twitter is there for everybody to use as they want to use it.

I even just told a joke on it: took me about a dozen tweets, but it seemed to go down great. What gets me most about great services like Twitter is these people that do nothing that advertise – every tweet is an advert with a website address on it that you must visit. OK, I do that, but only about one tweet in ten if that. And that’s OK, because nobody said you can’t, and I have had a lot of good information from Twitter.

Twitter is excellent social networking site, and enables people of totally different backgrounds, and with different agendas, to keep in contact with one another. The one great thing about it is that, if you don’t like what the other guy is tweeting to you, then you can block them out. Simple as that! Nobody can send you messages if you don’t want them to.

Personally, I don’t care a great deal, but I can see how others would and I would never knowingly spam or annoy any other Tweeter because it is people like us that keep services like Tweeter going and keep the World Wide Web alive and vibrant.

Stuart Michael M asked:

There are lots of online social networking methods and one of them is Twitter. It is a site for people to post and read messages. These messages are called tweets. You don’t have to post long messages as the main objective is to keep your messages short and precise. The number of words is limited up to 140 characters only. In Twitter, you will have your own followers who love to follow up with your updates. All your messages posted will be displayed on your main page and at the same delivered to your followers. This social networking site has becoming well known with more than millions of people registered with Twitter.

One way to have lots of followers is to have a great and creative Twitter backgrounds. There are lots of designs templates available in the Internet. Some are free to download while some you have to pay. Default Twitter background color is blue and it looks simple. However, to differentiate your page with others and to show your activeness in tweeting, it is great if you can personalize your own page layout.

First type of background would be repetitive pattern. Choose a pattern that you like such as flower, leaves or an artistic image and repeat it. It works well with all range of PC resolutions. The graphic chosen must be simple so that your background will not look complicated.

You can also set your background with dark colors. Dark color brings elegance and stylishness to your Twitter page. You can also blend two colors as your background. You can also select preset backgrounds that are available in the Internet.

If you are not good in designing or simply don’t have time to design all this, you can hire a designer to do it for you. All you need is to pay for the services required. Remember, a great background will help you to increase the number of your Twitter followers.

Twitter Trends

Andrew M Nathan asked:

Twitter trends has become one of the best features of twitter. It allows you to take a pulse on what is going on in America and around the world. Instead of having to rely upon censored news stations, the news can be given to you by anyone in the world.

So when Iran was having their student protests last summer we could learn about it through Twitter and find out exactly what was happening on the ground. We did not have to wait for the inevitably jaded journalists who propagate one sided versions of the story. Twitter has actually brought us more fair and balanced reporting, because everyone has the chance to report on what is going on.

Now this does not mean that everyone is correct in their views. What it means is that we can sift through the information from thousands of people to find the correct answer that we feel is right. The power is in our hands, as delivered by Twitter through Twitter Trends.

That also gives us a lot of responsibility as we have to do a good job of what information to pass on to other Twitter users to keep them informed and correct the mistakes of others so that the information is correct and timely for the users of Twitter.

The use of Twitter trends has put the nail in the coffin for broadcast journalism. No longer must we wait for the 12, 6, and 10 o’clock news. Instead today we have the power to present the news to our peers through Twitter. Those stories that are deemed more important than others and have the power to help or hurt this nation are discussed more often than the stories that have no or little effect on our lives.

Using Twitter Connections

Guy Siverson asked:

When you really want to optimize Twitter you need to make the most of Twitter connections. What is a Twitter connection? Well, it’s not targeting followers though that is important. And it’s not sharing Twitter love via RT’s and/or #FollowFriday though equally critical to successful ventures on Twitter.

No, Twitter has now become some type of dating service though you can certainly meet some twitterific tweepers on Twitter. The other day I logged on to Twitter direct, which is something, I rarely ever do these days, but I was looking for an answer to someone’s Yahoo Answer question. It was necessary for me to select “settings” from the top menu to do so. It was then that I found it. A tab labeled “connections” that I hadn’t personally seen before. Not sure how long it has been there, but when I looked at what it contained I was quite aware of why I don’t use Twitter direct on a regular basis. It’s because of this tab. Well, not the tab, but the contents of the tab. See, it lists all the third party applications I allow to access my Twitter account.

Trying to use Twitter without these application is like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel. If I were me, I would connect to the following services without question. Wait! I – ME – weird… Anyway, let me proceed.

Twitter Grader: Fantastic way of finding out who’s who and where. (Just the facts) TwitWall: Say goodbye to the 140 character limit of Twitter. (simply Twitterific) Twitter Karma: Stops people from not following back with a simple click (buh byeee).

Those 3 tools mean so much to my own personal Twitter success. I also like TwitterFeed as it allows me to gain more mileage out of my work. Though, I’m betting not everyone has a blog, website & Twitter profile though to use this utility that is not required. Another fun one to consider is Fun140 that has a bunch of free fun quizzes and games to share with others. Though sticking with the first three Twitter connections will bring you many miles down the road of social networking success on Twitter. How do I know? Easy. That’s what it did for me.

How does this happen??? I don’t get what they mean when they say that you have property not recognized by wmg, or something like that, or why they remove your video due to terms of violation. Does it get removed right away or at any random time?
