Social media marketing is a powerful tool that enables you to form personal connections with potential consumers, vividly capture their attention and indirectly market your product or service. Subtlety is key – social media can strongly promote your domain and enhance your Internet presence, however, you will not make connections by using ‘hard sell’ techniques.

The general idea behind social media marketing is to help and inform the consumer and then expose them gently to your indirect marketing concept. There are several strategies that you can implement in order to establish a genuine personal connection with users so that you can indirectly market your product and encourage the expansion of Internet traffic. These include:

Providing useful, accurate and relevant information Entertaining and amusing the user Explore social issues and current events Genuinely reviewing a product, service, location or experience

How Does Social Media Marketing Work?

In order to raise your online profile and create a strong domain presence you may wish to consider Social Media Marketing. This digital marketing strategy has recently exploded onto the Internet scene and now the majority of companies devote a significant portion of their marketing budget to this highly effective advertising strategy.

Connecting with users can take place through a diverse range of media sharing and social network contexts for example -

Twitter Blogs YouTube Flickr Facebook Myspace

By creating an online community, it is possible to establish virtual connections with an enormous network of potential clients and customers. Let’s take a look at two specific examples.

Twitter – Establish Trust and Interest

Microblogging is an extremely short blog that is restricted in length. This forces the tweet to contain maximum information in the fastest time possible. You must not exceed 140 characters. Tweets should be short, punchy and compelling in order to capture the interest of your target audience. Don’t try to instantly sell your business concept, build a following, create an interesting series of tweets and then gradually mention your product after you have established trust and interest. People really do resent the hard sell approach, so the idea here is ‘softly, softly’. You are not purely advertising, you are informing and entertaining online users and simultaneously promoting your product.

YouTube – A Mutually Beneficial Relationship

YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. It is likely that the majority of the 1 billion Internet users available globally have used YouTube. It is a virtual melting pot of information and entertainment. People watch videos containing music, entertainment, news, ‘how to’ procedures, product reviews – basically the content is unlimited in its scope. You really can YouTube anything. Because many people are visual learners, it is a highly effective method of learning a procedure or process. For example, you wish to sell motor oil online. You may create an informative YouTube video entitled ‘How to Perform an Oil Change’.

Create a short video filming someone performing an oil change and giving instructions verbally. Insert a link to your domain. Place you URL in the description box of your video clip. Wear a T-Shirt advertising your website while performing the oil change. People will watch the video and follow your link to your e-commerce venture selling motor oil. Alternatively, you may do a short product review and simultaneously promote your service.

This form of social media marketing is underpinned by the concept of a mutually beneficial relationship. You impart wisdom or practical advice to the consumer and they become aware of your business.

A final word… There are many different forms of social media marketing out there and it is well worth exploring all available options and dedicating some of your advertising budget to take advantage of the potential. If you are blogging, tweeting or video sharing focus on creating an online virtual community, establish mutually beneficial relationships, create trust and genuinely help and inform your potential consumers. Get the users interested, make them want to come back to your social media zones and in the process tempt them to take a look at your business. It truly is a ‘win win’ situation.

Social Media is one of the best platforms for helping you to establish credibility in your market, increase your visibility online and develop relationships with people in your target audience. But after you have done all of those things the next step of course is how to leverage those relationships into sales of your products or services.

Recent studies show us that it takes between 7-10 touches or contacts before a prospect is actually ready to spend money for your products and services online.

So how do actually move your prospects from connections to conversation and from there to conversions, consumers and finally into clients? One way of course is by using a freebie to capture email addresses and then use a series of autoresponder messages to move them through the marketing process. Once your prospects sign up for your list you can send them further marketing messages by email. Success here rests on whether they will actually open those emails and decide to take the next step.

We all know email overload is a big problem. Most people get so much email they only actually open about 10% of their messages. I think I open even less than that! There is just too little time in the day.

Have you been having a frustrated relationship with Facebook lately – mostly over their tendency to turn a new application or feature ON for everyone, and then make you spend precious time turning it off, blocking those crazy little applications, or hiding people’s updates on your News Feed?

What is the News Feed?

News Feed enables you to know all the events related to a Facebook acquaintance. On your profile page, you will receive a “feed” of the newest events produced by your friends and social groups’ interests whenever you log in.

I really wanted to be able to personalize my News Feed, and show only those friends whose feeds I wanted to see when I log into my Facebook account. The only obvious way to accomplish this was to click the ‘hide’ arrow on the right side of a feed for every Facebook friend whose updates I did NOT want to include.

Very time consuming.

But I discovered there is a fast and easy way to create your own personalized Facebook News Feed, and have it be the default newsfeed in your account.

If you’ve been frustrated by this as well, we have created a short video on our website showing you exactly how to do this in your Facebook account. You will find the link to access it at the bottom of this article.

Here’s a Shortcut to Customize your Facebook NewsFeed!

Another way to make sure you are seeing only the feeds of those whom you want to see is to create a special friends list with only those individuals in it.

Once you have that list, it will appear in the drop down menu on the left side of your page. Simply scroll down to it, grab it with your mouse, and drag it to the top of your left column. That becomes your new NewsFeed.

Social Media Works

Brenda Williams asked:

There are some who doubt the power that social media has to launch a business into success. However, social media is a highly effective way to get your business up and running. For example, let’s say that you just launched a new business that sells stylish children’s clothing in the area where you live. Now, let’s say that you have done a little research on your niche market and have found out that most people who purchase the kinds of clothing that you sell frequently use the Internet as a means of finding the best deal. In this case, creating a Twitter account can really help build your online presence and credibility because it allows you to directly communicate with those people who shop at your store. Additionally, it allows you to receive feedback (both positive and negative), which can greatly help you to more successfully target your core audience.

In addition to microblogging sites such as Twitter, there are also other social media sites as well. For example, Facebook is one of the largest (if not the largest) social media site that people use today. Originally meant only for college staff and students, Face-book has since opened up to the public and met a more than warm reception as each day, millions of people log in to build and promote their business, become fans of causes that they believe in and communicate with friends and loved ones who live hundreds of miles away. If you play your cards right, you can really use a social networking site like Facebook to your business’ advantage. For example, every time one of my friends becomes a ‘fan’ of a business or cause that they support, it shows up automatically in my news feed when I log in. If the business or cause that they joined looks like anything, I may click on the link to the Face-book fan page in order to read up more on the business. If I like what I see, I may click within that fan page on a link that will take me directly to that business’ web page.

There also other networking sites that aren’t necessarily geared towards promoting your business, but which are great for meeting other people and/or professionals within your niche. On line communication is so vast that it now encompasses a large part of what many businesses spend their marketing and time on. On line business networking meetings such as webinars and chat rooms now spill over into real life meetings where you can officially put a face to the name of someone you have befriended in one of your on line communities.

While there is still a lot left to learn about online social networking, there is no doubt that social networking has cemented itself in most prominent businesses as a solid way to build a business’ on line credibility as well as their overall marketability. Whether you are just starting out with your business or whether you are a more established business that is now looking to branch out into the world of online marketing, social media networks can certainly take you where you want to go.

Savvy professionals continuously manage their careers by creating visibility in their professional communities and creating authentic relationships with people who could be in a position to help them if they ever find themselves in a job search. Develop a networking strategy where you give more than you get and see how quickly people start giving back to you in the form of advice, leads, and general job search tips. Below are a few suggestions for improving the quality of your network before you need it.

Make Yourself Digitally Distinct.

Make it easy for people to find you online. Put your name in quotes and Google yourself. Are you easy to find online, are there multiple people with your name online, and if you do have a web presence, does it accurately reflect who you are? Take ownership of your online identity by creating identity management profiles with branded bios on sites such as ZoomInfo, Ziggs, Claim ID, and Naymz.

Open Up Your Electronic Rolodex.

Leverage the power of sites such as The Ladders, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, Spoke, and Xing to connect online and extend professional relationships to the online world. Participate in online conversations, share your knowledge, and participate in group features that position you as a credible expert in your field. Align yourself with different affinity groups such as school alumni, corporate alumni, or groups based on hobbies or interests to build community and enhance your circle of contacts.

Blog or Comment on Other People’s Blogs.

Position yourself as an industry or functional expert before you need a new job by blogging on your area of expertise or commenting on other people’s blogs in your industry/job function space. You will make powerful connections and elevate your credibility in your space which will make it a lot easier to be recognized and remembered by the people who may be able to help, should you be in a job search in the future.

Become Active in Professional Organizations or Do Volunteer Work.

Offer to chair a committee for a professional association geared towards your job function or industry or contribute content to a professional organization’s newsletter. These activities inspire trust and they are a great way to showcase your strengths among a group of peers. Or become a volunteer for an organization or cause you are passionate about. Build meaningful relationships and become top of mind with other volunteers.

Reconnect with Friends and Colleagues with Natural Touchpoints.

To ease the awkwardness of reconnecting with friends and colleagues you may have lost touch with, find times during the year when reconnecting might not seem so out of the blue. For example, the holiday season and birthdays offer an excellent opportunity to reach out to people with cards. By reigniting the relationship at a time when you don’t need anything, you reestablish the ties without it looking like you are reaching out to ask a favor.

Networking is not a one-time event. It happens over time. Find ways to forge meaningful relationships with people each day and you will find that you will almost always have someone to reach out to for information, advice, and even job search leads.

Many social media sites pages are similar to profiles except that they are used for commercees, organizations, and a number of different types of interests. You can expect to see a Many social media sites page about a restaurant just as easily as you might spot a many social media sites page on pets. There are several categories to choose from: a local commerce, a brand or product, or an artist, band, or public figure. The interesting thing about many social media sites pages is that you don’t necessarily have to be the celebrity to put up a page about your celebrity. It can be a fan club or a Many social media sites pages extolling the virtues of Nutella, if that’s what suits you.

The many social media sites pages work very similar to profile pages except that they are public. They have some of the same features as your profile page like a Wall and the ability to upload files. They also have discussion groups and and a way for fans to join your many social media sites page. The service is free and promoted virally throughout many social media sites and even comes up in the search results. The actions that people take on your many social media sites page are also integrated in the news feed and thus your product or service can spread virally through word of mouth. If you use many social media sites pages in conjunction with Social Ads, you can increase the chances of your product getting viral momentum.

Networks

Networks are important to join because they allow other people in your network to view your profile without necessarily having to add you as a friend. So, if you are interested in having advertising links and marketing to a wider audience, you will want to join as many networks as you can. Unfortunately, you are limited to five networks and most you have to have some identifying email address to confirm in order to join the network. So, you can’t just say you work at IBM, you actually have to have an email address in that domain to prove that you work there before social media sites will sign you up for that network.

The exception to that rule is the geographic location network. You should pick a geographic location where you do most of your commerce, not where you live. The reason for that is that you may not be allowed to change your geographic network that often and you can only choose one. So, make sure you are careful when you choose the geographic network you would like to belong to. Many social media sites will not require an email address or anything for your geographic network.

The other types of networks you can join besides the regional and work networks are school networks. For these, you will have to have an email address under the school’s domain. So, if you are a person who is soon to graduate, make sure you get in the network now, before it’s too late and you lose the email address necessary to confirm that you are indeed a student at that school.

One of the interesting thing is that many social media sites is now saying it is phasing out networks. Seeing that social media sites was built around the concept of school networks, it will be interesting to find out what they plan to do with this area. Keep an eye out for future developments in this area, but until that happens be sure to add your networks immediately upon joining social media sites. It will also give you access to view other people’s profiles in the networks that you claim.

Well, if your a big fan of Twitter, Facebook and MySpace then you already know in order to use them effectively as a social media marketing tool, you have to stay on TOP of your game and keep a routine going to get you the best exposure and reach, to build your credibility and relationships.

3 Ways To Avoid Social Media Burnout… What Is It?

Have you ever spent a TON of time organizing your social media profiles, adding new website URL’s, and making sure that your able to reply to just about everyone that either reply to you or send you a email? Then, you already know how TIRING it can be trying to keep up to the point you just want to turn off the computer and get back to it later… That’s social media burnout ;)

#1 – Limit Your Time… This is one of the most important ones. It can be tempting wanting to reply to everyone and to let everyone know that you really do care, but it can also be frustrating too. The BEST way I deal with this and it’s one that you’re going to have to get use to.

ONLY qualify those that are worth your time first and reply to them, like your actual friends, joint venture partners etc. Let people know where they can reach you, like your email or by phone and your time available. Then you can reply to others later on to free up your time. Setting a time frame to work on this is important.

#2 – Hire Help To Manage It… This one is really simple to do, you would surprised at how much people would love to write articles, guest blog post, or even create new content for you. One of the best ways to do this is to hire a VA (Virtual Assistant) to help you manage these task.

You can find a lot of respected Virtual Assistants on Twitter by going to “twitter search” and typing in “virtual assistants” or you can find a Virtual Assistant Twitter List that has 100′s of Virtual Assistants ready to take on your social media campaign. Make sure your Virtual Assistant is experienced with social media marketing.

#3 – Measure/Choose The Right Social Media Platform… If your going to be using social media marketing, you definitely want to make sure that you know which networks to choose and how to measure your influence and statistics correctly. It’s easy to use Facebook or Twitter all day, BUT if you don’t know which one is actually giving you more exposure for your personal brand and websites, then it’s not worth using them at all.

For example, do not just measure by the amount of @ replies, direct messages, or emails you receive, sure that does say a little about your influence, but it’s best to go deeper such as measuring your actual website statistics. Where are your visitors coming from? How long are they staying on your website? How much times are they returning etc…

Social Media is FUN, and if used effectively will produce traffic, sales, signups and subscribers, but you HAVE to know what’s working, and why it’s working so that you can rinse and repeat and take your personal brand to a higher level. It’s easy to get social media burnout, it happens to the best of us, but these 3 methods will help you eliminate as much of the hassle as possible.

Social Media

Helen Reimer asked:

Social Media is a great way to get free traffic coming to your website. Not only do you get free traffic from the social media sites, but the free traffic coming from the search engines will also increase. This is because a lot of these social media links will count as quality back links. The more back links you have pointing to your website the higher you will rank in the search engines.

Think of Social Media as an actual social event, where you can go and hang out with other people. The more you hang out with them, the popular you will become.

Visit other people’s profiles and then subscribe, or request to be friends. People who aren’t interested will simply ignore you, and those who are interested will accept your invitation and come and visit your site. The more friends or subscribers you have, the greater the opportunity to make money.

The key here is to let people know about your site, or product without spamming them. Once they feel that you are spamming them, they will simply ignore you.

No one is obligated to respond to you, or even take a look at what you have to offer, so make your profile page interesting for them, or even give away free stuff to draw people to you. Write good content for your site, and update it regularly. This is a great way to show that you are an expert, to gain people’s trust, and to make new friends.

You can also leave comments on other people’s profiles to increase your followers, or your list of friends.

It may seem like a waste of time especially at the beginning, but then after a while once you start seeing some results, it all of a sudden becomes worth it. Over time your list of friends or subscribers will grow and more and more people will begin to take you up on your offers, click on your affiliate links, or whatever it is that you want them to do.

Most sites basically function the same way, but each site has its own rules, so make sure that you read their terms of services before reading to ensure you won’t get suspended from that site.

Some of the main sites that you can join are Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, RedGage, and Squidoo. Join up with one, get a readership going and then move on to the next one, or you can join them all at once if you like.

Twitter Tweets Twittering

Zuberr Nowrung asked:

If you haven’t been living in cave all this while, you probably already know what Twitter is and how much it is being talked about all around the World. Now, if you have been living in the cave, ask the person closest to you right now and he or she will tell you about Twitter.

It is not just another Web 2.0 site meant for socializing and making friends on Internet, but it’s an innovation in itself. The “microblogging” idea makes it sweet and simple. Compared to other popular social networks, like Facebook and MySpace, I think Twitter is easier to use and maintain. When one wants to send a message to friends, simply “microblog” it and all those following will get the message.

Recently, there was world news about a guy who got arrested in Egypt during some riots. While in jail, he twittered about his arrest by police using his mobile phone and his friends following him on Twitter did the necessary to get him out. You can in fact very easily connect your mobile devices to your Twitter account, such that twittering becomes as easy as text messaging.

The basic idea is that you have a microblog and people can choose to follow you and you can also follow others. In this way, whenever someone makes an update, the whole network of friends gets the update. Of course, you have the option to protect your updates, so you can only allow those whom you know to follow you.
