Steve Cowen asked:

There may be many reasons why you need to find a person’s phone number. Sometimes it is because you would like to make contact with a long lost friend or relative. However, in other cases, you may want to obtain someone’s number for professional reasons because you need a job done, or you would like to get in touch with a co-worker, etc. You will find that the social networking site LinkedIn can help put you in contact with the professionals you’re looking for.

How? Searching for people on LinkedIn is a very straight forward and relatively easy procedure. The following tips will help walk you through the process:

Tip 1 – Go to the web page – Open your internet browser and go to LinkedIn.com. At this point you may read about the site if it is your wish to do so.

Tip 2 – Choose your search option – Once you access the homepage, you will immediately be provided with four search options:

1 – “Find people from your company” – enter the name of your company or another company if the person you are looking for works for another company and you know the name.

2 – “Find people from your school” – If you don’t know where the individual you are trying to find is working, enter the high school, college, university, etc.

3- “Search for someone by name” – If you do not know the company name or the name of the school, you can search for the first and last name of the person.

4 – “People Directory” – Choose the letter that corresponds with the first or last name of the person you are looking for. This is useful if you don’t remember how to spell their name.

Tip 3 – Successful search results – If the person you are looking for is a member of LinkedIn, you will be able to see the basic information of their profile such as their name, education, and the name of the company they work for. However, if you would like to view the full profile of the individual, which often enables you to contact them directly, you will need to sign in.

Tip 4- Create an account – If you are not a LinkedIn member, you will need to sign up. Signing up is free and takes only a few minutes of your time. Simply follow all of the instructions and provide the information that is required. Note: If you feel wary about signing up, you should read the “User Agreement” and “Privacy Policy” before joining.

Tip 5 – View full profile and contact your friend, co-worker, etc. – Once you’ve signed in you can find out if the person you want to contact has listed a number where they can be reached. If no phone number is available, you can always contact them via email or by sending them a message through LinkedIn.

Don’t forget that if you have an old phone number that belongs to the person, you can find out who owns a phone number [http://www.whoownsthisphonenumber.com] and see if they still have this number by using a reverse phone search.

Facebook and How it Can Help Business

Brenda Williams asked:

“Do you have a Facebook profile?” “I tried to add you to my friends list…” These are two phrases that you will hear commonly uttered amongst those who have these profiles; and it seems that nowadays, everyone and their mother (literally) has one!

While this can be used for both business and personal use now, I still opt to use mine strictly for personal use, only adding friends that I speak to and hang out with on a a fairly regular basis as well as family members such as aunts uncles and cousins, etc. Since joining Face book (commonly abbreviated to just ‘FB’), I have truly been able to really reconnect with some of my family members. Because my mother’s family is from another country; and because my father’s family is so incredibly spread out across the United States, it seems that we have all now found this medium with which to communicate. For instance, I recently attended a family reunion with my grandmother in Rhode Island this past summer. I met cousins that I never even knew that I had. While I was up there, I asked if any of them had a Facebook account, to which several of the younger people as well as some of the older people responded that they did. Today, I keep up with what is going on in their lives and converse with them via Face book instant messages, private message, wall postings and photos. It’s been a great experience thus far.

In terms of business development, FB is a great idea. You can create something called a ‘fan page’ on Facebook, in which people can opt to essentially show their support for your business by ‘becoming a fan’. What happens then is that their picture will show up on the fan page that you’ve created for a particular business. You can then create what is called a ‘badge’ for your fan page, which you can later affix to your company’s web site, blog or elsewhere on the Internet. If you are interested in advertising on Facebook, this is also a possibility. FB offers users the option to create advertisements that will get posted on various web pages within it. Of course, you have to pay a small fee in order to advertise on it, but the fee is nominal. Not only this, but FB is used by so many people that it almost makes sense to want to advertise there.

Whatever your business is, FB is a great avenue to pursue in terms of creating a buzz about what it is you do. By networking with friends, families, coworkers, neighbors and friends of friends, it shouldn’t be long before you start to see the results of your efforts. The only downside to Facebook is that in order for others to be able to leave comments and see your page, they have to be Facebook members as well. The other nice feature about FB is that it allows you to post jobs as well as the RSS feed from blogs, which are both great ideas for putting your information out there!

A question about my social media paper?

My professors say my Intros and Conclusions are WEAK
and I always get a 95% on my essays :(

Can somebody read these and tell me if they are weak?

Intro:
The rising popularity of social networking sites are rivaling for consumption and putting strain on the business aspects of companies in the television and print industry. Internet usage is now cutting into the expenditures of traditional media, such as television and print. With young people spending increased amounts of time online, social networking sites are on the rise and are offering new outlets to marketers. Advertisers now attempt to market their television shows, movies, and print ads effectively through social media sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, in hopes of reaching younger audiences and as a result, have been successful.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the facts have been presented to clarify the effective movement from traditional media to social media. Social networking sites have opened new doors for advertising in hopes of reaching the younger audience. As a result, they have gained the attention of the older audience. The once popular 20th century inventions are integrating into the Internet and the advertisers who are smart enough will keep following in order to make revenue. The weight of ad money has been slipping off the ship of traditional media and going to the web. Conventional marketers stuck in 20th century marketing standards would be lucky to even find a life boat.

I’ve found a few people on LinkedIn that I know from a place where I’ve just started volunteering. Would it be appropriate to add them to my network now, or wait a couple months?

Also, I need suggestions for other professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Thanks.
