Microsoft Acquired Facebook Share

Anja Glauch asked:
For the bargain prize of 117 millions pounds, Microsoft bought a 1.6% stake of Facebook. Other companies such as Yahoo or Google also wanted to invest in one of the most popular social networking websites but Facebook declined their offer.
The aim of this partnership is simply to increase profits through advertising on both sides. Microsoft will sell internet ads for Facebook outside the US. The company already had an agreement with Facebook to provide banner advertising and links to the US version of the social networking site. This was the part of the deal discussed during several weeks. With this acquisition, Microsoft will become the exclusive third party seller of overseas advertising outside the US on Facebook. Knowing that the social networking site currently has 49 millions users, this could be a huge financial opportunity for Microsoft.
The Facebook deal is Microsoft’s answer in its battle with Google. Looking one year back in October 2006, Google beat Microsoft with the 1.65bn dollar acquisition of online video sharing website YouTube.
With this partnership Facebook is looking to increase its current audience of nearly 50 million active users by becoming a real magnet for advertiser and also to compete fiercely with its rival MySpace which currently has 100 million users. Facebook also wants to take advantage of existing Microsoft skills. According to Charlene Li, an analyst at Forrester Research, the software group knew better -in comparison to Google- how to work with program developers and build computing environments. She said that “Microsoft is a company that knows how to build platforms, knows how to develop relationships with developers. The social networking site is hoping with Microsoft ‘s collaboration to struggle less to reach leader position.”

Facebook Game – PetVille Review
Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 at

Mabel Lee asked:
It is not surprising to find a lot of Pet games lately in Facebook as nearly every major developer are now in full steam to make their own version. This week we will review into Zynga own version of pet game, PetVille.
Gameplay
We first start by looking what Zynga has to offer us in PetVille after so many developers has gone where no man has gone before, pet simulators! Now first off we always start the game with the character creation screen and not to my surprise I find this in PetVille.
The pet creation screen is rather simple to follow for any age group. From what I can see, this game was made for the younger audience, but adults may find it rather interesting as well. Nothing too special about the creation screen as you will find your usual gender class, face, body color, eyes and so on. Once you fully customize your character to the way you wanted, the next thing to do is to go to your new home.
There you will be introduced to your new neighbor Nosie as she will guide you to the basic fundamentals of the game mechanics. Those who have played pet games before will find themselves right at home as PetVille has the same mechanics as any other pet games out there in Facebook.
Your pet will be usually in an empty room during the first time you visit it (Minus the flower vase and the small little drawer). Players can then decide what they wish to do with their pets and its surrounding. Other feature in the game that players might notice is the yard. To see the feature, players can usually visit the neighbor house and just get a scroll around to see how PetVille’s house arrangement is like.
Once players gather enough cash, player can then take their pets for shopping. This is very well done for Zynga as the menu will take you to different locations in the game. The stores look exactly like shopping malls with various levels and also the accessories that are arranged in proper order. Gone are the days on all the square boxes for this game. However, I do notice that there is a large portion of goods that is being sold in the game that use Facebook Cash (Real World Money) and I think very large number of people will be not be able to afford it or would not even think about it. Personally speaking here, this is getting a bit troublesome lately as a lot of games are now promoting this sort of options to make more money out of the people in Facebook.
Now let us forget about the money part. We will go to the shopping area where you decide to get what you want in the shopping malls. Players can also start dressing up their pets the way they see fit. From shirts to hats and so on! This is rather normal, but some cloths are rather interesting really. If you fancy dressing up as Indiana Jones on your pet, then you are in luck as one of the costumes is available in the shopping mall is design to look like the adventures archeologists.
New feature that I notice in the game is the Pet Personality skills. In this feature, players can train their pets in 3 types of personalities and this will reflect how your pets react to their environments. Personalities are categorized such as creativity, troublemaker and outgoing. Thinking it was fun to make my pet into a troublemaker, I focused all the skill points to it. True enough the next day I visit her, she was thrown to the local pound for making a bit of trouble in the neighborhood. This is rather a fun feature as players may not expect what will happen on the personality they focus their pets on. Points can usually be gain by giving your pets food (Which can be asked from friends or buy with Facebook money)
Mini-game is also made available to players as there are a few types of games that players can jump into like Pop the bubbles blow up or pick up weekly challenges if you feel up to it. Weekly challenges are changed weekly and new challenges will be provided to players to achieve the goal. Players will then have to decide if they wish to play it or just wait for new challenges the next coming week.
Finally, players may find that their pet will tap the screen if no mouse movement is detected on the Flash game. Cute feature if you ask me.
Graphic
PetVille is fully 3D when it comes to the pets themselves. You can see the pet moves smoothly on the screen as it tries to get your attention or even just doing nothing. The environment and the inventories are also nicely done as all the textures and sprites are well design and colorful to attract anyone’s attention.
Sound
PetVille has a very happy like type of music and your pet will make various kind of noise as he or she goes around and does her usual routine. Once in a while you might even hear birds and cricket singing in the background. This might sound a bit weird especially when you are actually indoor.
Conclusion
This is a very nice and well designed game that is made for all ages. This game is fully 3D and very easy to play with and people who have played Pet Games in Facebook is recommend to try this game.
I give this a 4.5 out of 5 rating.

Facebook Tips – Are You Making Any of These 3 Deadly Social Marketing Mistakes on Facebook?
Monday, November 8th, 2010 at

Jeff Herring asked:
Facebook is a great Social Marketing tool to use to build your connections and your brand. At the same time, I see so many beginners and even veterans making the same mistakes that sabotage their marketing on Facebook.
Let’s take a closer look at the top 3 biggest mistakes and what to do instead.
Top 3 Facebook Mistakes
1. Market all the time – Why do people do this? In a social setting, would you walk in carrying a giant billboard? Can you imagine what the reaction would be?
Yet it happens all the time. Someone sets up a new Facebook account and begins to flash their marketing messages all over the place. This is the quickest way to get ignored.
What to do instead - Follow the 80/20 rule of Social Marketing – 80% conversation & relationship building and 20% marketing. Share the parts of your life you are willing to share. Respond to what other people share. Help out when you can by answering questions and referring to any resources you know about that could help. Sometimes these can be your resources. Now you are able to market while being social. Which is the point.
2. No Regular Updates – Another big mistake I see is failure to be involved and update regularly. It only takes a few moments to update your status. And by update your status I do not mean your latest adventures in Mafia Wars or what you have added to your Aquarium or Farmville. This does not help your marketing and just makes you look like someone with too much time on their hands.
What to do instead - Follow my LIFE model of Social Marketing. You can update with Links, Information, Fun, and Events. Links can be information you have found or information about you. Information can be tips and tools about your niche. Fun can be sharing your life with your followers, to the extent with which you are comfortable. Events can be events you are attending or events you are holding.
3. No Fan Page – Lots of people try to have both their friendship world and their marketing world on the same page. I admit I made this mistake when I first started out. It gets confusing for your followers and for you. At the time of this writing, I’m in the process of moving my business followers to my Fan Pages and using my Facebook Profile for my longtime and new friends.
What to do instead - Create a Facebook Fan Page. Some of the advantages are:
1) Your updates are indexed by Google which helps you build your online visibility.
2) On your Profile Page you are limited to only 5000 followers. On your Facebook Fan Page there is no limit to the number of Fans you can have.
3) You are allowed to treat your Facebook Fan Page as a marketing tool, inviting followers/fans to sales pages and opt in pages.

Getting to Know the Facebook Wall
Saturday, November 6th, 2010 at

Beverly Frank asked:
The online social networking site game is one that a lot of people have a fun time playing. There are many great sites that are excellent ways to connect with new friends, old friends and business colleagues. One of the most, if not the most, popular social networking sites is Facebook. During the short history of Facebook it has gained enormous popularity and allows people to connect in ways that no one ever thought would have been possible. Here is a look at the Facebook Wall feature and how you can use it.
The whole idea of Facebook is to be able to connect with other people that are called your Facebook friends. The list of people that you are friends with on Facebook can be small and very intimate or very large and full of people that are mostly acquaintances. The Wall is a great way to keep track of your own interactions with other people and also to see what your Facebook friends are doing too.
The Wall is something that is available to every Facebook user and is an important tool in using the site. The Wall basically makes up a history of interactions of a specific person on Facebook and gives a chronological view of what they are doing on the site. Status updates are a very important part of Facebook as well and the Wall shows these status updates, where people post comments about things they are doing to their own Wall. The Wall is essentially where everyone posts their day to day interactions on Facebook which makes it much easier to keep track of what is going on at all times.
The main page or home page on Facebook is called the News Feed and is basically a combination of all the Wall posts of everyone you know on Facebook. The best way to access your own Wall directly is by clicking on your name of profile picture in the upper left hand corner of the main page. This will pull up your own Wall on Facebook which will give you a history of all your interactions on the site. It will show things like comments you have made about other people’s posts and your own posts as well. It displays all the information from your account history in chronological order. At the top of the page, you will find a box that has the text ‘What is on your mind?’ in it. This is the place that allows you to update your status and make posts to your Wall. The comments here will show up on the News Feed pages of all your friends who can then make comments or additions to the thread and interaction can start. This box allows you to do a lot of different things with a post such as attach photos, a video, an event, a link and other items. The ability to add these other types of media is a fairly recent development for Facebook and the Wall now offers a great way to add new content without needing to go to specific parts of the website.
Under the update box, you will then see the history of all the things you have added to Facebook or that other people have added about you. It will show you recent things that have happened on the site and also shows notes about friends you have added, comments you have made and things you have ‘liked’. The Wall is a great tool because you can look at your own Wall in addition to the Wall of all your friends on the site. It can be a great way to catch up with friends and to learn what they are doing in their lives.

Facebook and How it Can Help Business
Sunday, October 31st, 2010 at
6:00 pm
Brenda Williams asked:
“Do you have a Facebook profile?” “I tried to add you to my friends list…” These are two phrases that you will hear commonly uttered amongst those who have these profiles; and it seems that nowadays, everyone and their mother (literally) has one!
While this can be used for both business and personal use now, I still opt to use mine strictly for personal use, only adding friends that I speak to and hang out with on a a fairly regular basis as well as family members such as aunts uncles and cousins, etc. Since joining Face book (commonly abbreviated to just ‘FB’), I have truly been able to really reconnect with some of my family members. Because my mother’s family is from another country; and because my father’s family is so incredibly spread out across the United States, it seems that we have all now found this medium with which to communicate. For instance, I recently attended a family reunion with my grandmother in Rhode Island this past summer. I met cousins that I never even knew that I had. While I was up there, I asked if any of them had a Facebook account, to which several of the younger people as well as some of the older people responded that they did. Today, I keep up with what is going on in their lives and converse with them via Face book instant messages, private message, wall postings and photos. It’s been a great experience thus far.
In terms of business development, FB is a great idea. You can create something called a ‘fan page’ on Facebook, in which people can opt to essentially show their support for your business by ‘becoming a fan’. What happens then is that their picture will show up on the fan page that you’ve created for a particular business. You can then create what is called a ‘badge’ for your fan page, which you can later affix to your company’s web site, blog or elsewhere on the Internet. If you are interested in advertising on Facebook, this is also a possibility. FB offers users the option to create advertisements that will get posted on various web pages within it. Of course, you have to pay a small fee in order to advertise on it, but the fee is nominal. Not only this, but FB is used by so many people that it almost makes sense to want to advertise there.
Whatever your business is, FB is a great avenue to pursue in terms of creating a buzz about what it is you do. By networking with friends, families, coworkers, neighbors and friends of friends, it shouldn’t be long before you start to see the results of your efforts. The only downside to Facebook is that in order for others to be able to leave comments and see your page, they have to be Facebook members as well. The other nice feature about FB is that it allows you to post jobs as well as the RSS feed from blogs, which are both great ideas for putting your information out there!
