The main reason for the general fascination with brands is their ability to provide the consumers an extra value in addition to what the productservicecompany themselves can provide. A value which becomes the major motivation for consumers to desire the product. Everybody agrees about that, but from here on it becomes foggy. First of all, what is this value exactly? Also, how precisely is this value being added and incorporated into the brand? In this short article I attempt to provide a clear answer to both of these key questions and to suggest a workable approach to creating value added brands.

By way of introduction, let me say that strong brands are perceived instruments, means to achieve goals or benefits, in the consumer’s mind. They arouse emotions because they are perceived as a source of something beneficial. The positive emotions are direct outcomes of these anticipations. Their various symbolizations (name, logo, font, emblem, etc’) have little impact of their own. Their importance is mainly as identifiers of sources of already attributed and anticipated benefits.

The act of branding has ten different meanings which are ten different ways to create instrumentality or usefulness beyond the tangible benefits which the product/ service/ company themselves can provide.

Creating a conceived linkage to a tangible benefit

The most basic level of branding is creating a conceived linkage between the brand name and other identifiers and a tangible benefit. Huge brands like Pantene shampoo which promise to amend the six symptoms of unhealthy hair look, work in this level.

Forming a mental context

A “mental context” is a concept or an organizing principle which allows the consumer to conceive originally unrelated facts (such as: the various marketing activities of a company) as connected by a guiding intent or by some other common factor. For example: should you stumbled into a hotel like the “Hudson” or the “Royalton” in the heart of Manhattan, you are promised pleasure on different levels, but if you know you’re in a “Boutique Hotel” your stay becomes a very different experience altogether.

Directing an experience

This is essentially a hypnotic effect, in some cases related to Placebo. The branding here is the creation of an expectation which alters the sensed experience and enables the consumer a richer experience than what the product alone can provide him with. For instance, the expectation that an energy drink like “Red Bull” will energize, makes the consumers feel a wave of energy beyond the physical effect of the drink.

Creating a means of self presentation

Here the branding creates a symbol with a meaning that is well known to everybody in a relevant group, which enables the consumer to characterize himself. The brand “ABSOLUT vodka” became a way for yuppies to signal their yuppieness to other yuppies and so became a huge success.

Creating a means to deliver a message

The branding role in this approach is to create a symbol of another kind, its meaning known for everybody as well. The diamonds giant “De Beers” made the diamond a means of expressing commitment, making the physical fact that a diamond is indestructible a metaphor for the lastingness of a relationship.

Building a social-cultural authority

The next branding approach is the creation of an authority which the consumers can use as a guide, to help them understand what’s happening around them and to inform them which behavioral ways are normative, what will make them happier etc’. The brand “Apple” depicted the personal computer, not only as a working tool but also as a device for self expression and creativity.

Creating “a long hand”

In this approach, the branding is creating means for the consumer and empowering her to act for noble objectives and high purposes, which are important to her, but which she can’t achieve by herself. The “Body Shop” network made buying a way for contributing to the preservation of the environment and helping people in need all around the globe.

Creating an Alter Ego

Here, the brand is a way for the consumer to behave (at least on a fantasy level) in a manner he would like to but doesn’t dare, or isn’t willing to pay the price for. The provocation of the fashion brand “Diesel” is made as if “in the name of” the brand customers. They can feel like they are provocative themselves every time the brand advertises one of its outrageous campaigns.

Building an “Emotional Gym”

Opting for our civilized and protected life style, we compromise (not once, happily) a lot of our possibilities as humans. We go to the gym to prevent the degeneration of our body which, in our life style, doesn’t get to face the challenges it was designed for. Similarly, we watch movies and TV series’ in order to “exercise” emotional skills which aren’t legitimate in our life style. Brands like “Sicily” from “Dolce & Gabbana”, allows us too to experience such emotional possibilities.

Facilitating fantasies

With only a fine difference from the previous approach, this branding approach helps the consumer to fantasize an alternative reality. The brand “Timberland” was designed as a way for consumers to fantasize about courageous adventures against the forces of nature.

The understanding of the different kinds of added value, the ways by which these values are instrumental to the consumer and the methods by which brands can be destined to be means for the consumer for achieving his goals, makes the difference between masterful creations of brands and amateur imitation which produces mere look-alikes.

People who are involved in e-commerce understand how marketing can be very expensive. In order to have sales, marketing your products or services to people who are in need of them is vital. Social networks present a viable internet marketing alternative or supplement. Here are 3 reasons why you should integrate social networks into your marketing plan online.

Social networking websites are known to attract a lot of people. It has been said that the top 10 Social Networking websites receive about 45 percent of the total number of active internet users. This really is a proof of how powerful these websites can be.

One very good example of a prominent and extremely prolific social network is MySpace. Websites such as MySpace give access to people of various interests. For social networking website owners, the main benefit comes from the content that social network users produce and lodge in their site. The following are the three benefits to business owners and internet marketers.

Number 1: They give you a large market to sell to

If you are apprehensive about integrating social networking in your overall marketing plan, recall what the Fox Interactive President said during the Web 2.0 Summit. He noted that MySpace has managed to acquire acquiring a user base whose number is equivalent to the population of Buffalo. Imagine how large this is. This represents millions of users from around the world that you can sell and market to.

Using social networks for marketing purposes is very good strategy. Millions of users are attracted to these networks. Entice these visitors to visit your website and you’ve got it made. Getting this many visitors through other marketing means can really cost a lot, but if you use social networks you can get it for free.

Social networks like MySpace open the gates for e-commerce businessmen; these sites provide you a place where you can market your products.

Number 2: They make targeted marketing easier

Social networks consist of several sub-networks to which one can gain access. These sub-networks have pre-filtered members and users so a business owner can easily pick and choose groups which he is targeting or whose members may be interested in what he has to offer.

It is amazing how deep a social network can go. It is truly a very fertile ground for one’s targeted internet marketing efforts. All you’ll have to do is browse over the groups and find people who may be interested in your products and services.

Number 3: They have enormous potential for boosting site traffic and sales

Though some webmasters still consider social networks as a fad meant only for teenagers, most businessmen have realized the social networks’ potential for boosting site traffic and sales. Online and real-world entrepreneurs alike are flocking to social networks. Affiliate marketers are not to be outwitted, and they have begun promoting the products of their affiliate partners in social networking sites. Fad or not, creative and strategic use of social networks can really boost a business’ earnings.

— Just Remember —

Given the wonderful opportunity that social networking sites offer, one can easily get carried away in his marketing campaign. You must remember, however, that as with any marketing method, tact, subtlety and strategy are all required. This is especially true for social networking sites since they are truly not for marketing purposes. Thus, you must never be too obvious about your efforts to sell. You should always couch your marketing pitch in a manner both personal and engaging.

Getting Sucked Into Social Networking

The 21st century saw the boom of the social networking industry. Online social communities have formed and flourished, bridging that space between and among people from different ages, race, and gender. Dozens of social networking sites are now catering to the hobbies and interests of millions of users all over the world.

Social networking began with Classmates.com in 1995. This site’s goal is to help its members find, connect, keep in touch, and form a network with friends and acquaintances from preschool through college, from work, or from the military.

Unlike other networking sites that gained popularity in recent years, Classmates.com uses real names instead of screen names. It also has a rigid privacy policy – the contact information of the member is never revealed within the network unless disclosed one on one by the account owner to another member.

Another social network, SixDegrees.com, emerged in 1997. SixDegrees allows its users to send messages or post bulletins to a list of friends or family members found within their network. SixDegrees faced its early demise four years later, just as the Friendster online community was starting to flourish.

With Friendster, you can invite and add as many friends as you want. You can also upload photos, write blogs and reviews, instant-message other members from your network, and form online groups with those who share the same interests as you have.

At present, Friendster’s social network has more than 40 million registered users. Until around April 2004, Friendster was on the top lead among dozens of other social networking sites. MySpace overtook Friendster in terms of page views, and many other social networking sites like Multiply and Hi5.

MySpace is one of the most popular websites in the Internet these days. Just like Friendster, it allows you to collect a network of friends and share blogs, photos, music, and videos with them. This social networking website is very much popular on English speaking countries, while most people from Asia prefer to use Friendster. MySpace already has more than a hundred million members in 2006.

The two major search engines, Google and Yahoo!, have launched their own social networking sites – orkut and Yahoo! 360°. Most blogging sites also allow you to create a network of friends online.

The thing is, most social networking sites work similarly – they all allow users to expand their network by inviting friends or acquaintances and to share information over the Internet. When you post blogs or files in your account, everyone from your network of friends will be informed of the update through RSS feeds. You also have the option to keep a particular post private to just a few individuals in your network.

Social networks are the best way to increase the number of people in which you are connected with, so if you are into business, you might as well get yourself into social networking to promote your product and increase your sales.

You can choose from hundreds social networking websites available in the web today. However, you might prefer to use a particular networking site in which a lot of your personal friends and contacts are already members. In this way, it’s much easier for you to expand your network and share the contents of your site to other users.

You have probably heard a lot about social bookmarking lately. As a matter of fact, you can spend lots of time and effort today just to find out what Social Bookmarking is all about. Well, not here. I am giving you this information.

I have done the hard part of the research and found this to be a super way to get more traffic to your site. While social bookmarking is a good hobby imagine if you could replace the website option with blogs? There are thousands of blogs out on the web there is no doubt about that and the most popular ones will be very hard to find. The best news is, it’s 100% FREE!

To demonstrate the differences between Social Bookmarking sites to normal search engines – let’s talk about Google for example as a search engine and how it works compared to Social Bookmarking site such as Furl or Delicious. In any social bookmarking site -your screen will show a range of tags which are in different colors size and intensity which marks the popularity of the tag. These Social Bookmark sites provide a great means of sharing quality content sites – so start bookmarking today!.

We all spend more and more time on the Internet- whether we’re researching; looking for work; or just browsing for fun. If you are looking for a great blog to read in the morning then you will love the chance to find out the most popular blog via your favorite bookmarking site!. Social bookmarks are usually public- hence the ‘social’ and they also allow other users to comment on the links you have saved.

Social bookmarking saves uploading a bunch of urls to your domain or remembering to send them to your Aunt Sally before you visit on the off chance you’ll need to remember that special something while you’re away. I get a goodly amount of traffic from social bookmarking sites like technorati as well but I would call that site a business bookmarking site so I’m not going to mention it here. Check out http://www.trafficwebsecrets.com/socialbookmarking/bookmarking_demon.html.

But remember; in the final analysis others will make the decision on whether your way of bookmarking is ethical and useful or spam. A good way to make social bookmarking more useful is to use the notes or comments fields when tagging pages. The simplicity of Social bookmarking websites allow you to save bookmarks online and Tag/Categorize them with keywords instead of saving them as bookmarks in the favorite’s list of your browser: Put Social Bookmarking on Autopilot!

Niche Social Networking for the Realtor

Facebook and MySpace are starting to get recognized as useful tools in networking for the online realtor. However, as social networking sites have become one of the front runners in connecting people on the Internet, people are starting to get interested in “niche” social networking: sites that connect people interested in specific subjects.

Active Rain is a network that has taken this concept and turned it into a growing community of realtors, real estate-related professionals and people looking for the right agent for them. It has pages for individuals to post information about themselves and the services they provide, forums, blogs, and a Q&A forum where people can post questions about real estate. So far, 60,000 people have become members, which makes for a lot of exposure on the site.

One does not need to be an Internet guru to create a “niche” network, though. It can be done with existing networking sites and applications. The key is to start out creating decent, useful information on your focus in the market. If you are selling homes in the Sunset Hill neighborhood of Seattle, by all means, start a Facebook group or your own message board about the Sunset Hill neighborhood. Whatever it is, make sure that it allows people to weigh in, ask questions and post answers.

Post information on the schools there, and the issues about them, the job scene, house care when dealing with Seattle weather… anything and everything that has to do with Sunset Hill and Seattle homes. Make sure it’s relevant, make sure it’s up-to-date. Look beyond selling houses and post about what people buying homes in Seattle and Sunset Hill are concerned about.

If you have happy clients who have conducted their home transaction through you, keep in contact with them and let them know about the site. Many home owners would be interested to know about a site where they can find the latest in local property values, information about the new mall being built or the issues facing the schools of the Sunset Hill area.

If you have people coming to your site for information on their neighborhood, even if they aren’t planning to buy or to sell, you have succeeded. The huge success of some sites through advertising has come about through popularity gained by giving stuff away for free. If you have a decent amount of steady visitors who come to your site for the information you post, you have a decent amount of leads who might mention you to real estate-minded friends and family.

Over the years, the beauty of the Internet has opened many different doors pertaining to socializing, networking, and the overall art of communication. Today, computer users of all ages are exploring the possibilities associated with chat rooms, discussion boards, forums, and online personals. Sending emails, instant messaging family and friends, and relaying text messages across the World Wide Web are also popular forms of contact. Despite the fact that users are unseen behind the guise of their computer, there is still a written and unwritten code of conduct that exists about the Internet.

Even in the world of online communication, one may offend, confuse, and irritate the people they send emails to or speak with in a chat room. Just as you participate in face-to-face communication, you are often aware of the way you move your body, execute hand gestures, or raise your voice. When contacting others across the Internet, there are also certain messages conveyed through the way you type out your thoughts. One of the most irritating online habits involves the use of all-caps when typing to others. Not only are long strings of capped words a strain on the eyes to read, but is often viewed as “shouting.”

When typing emails or chatting with others while online, spelling and grammar really does count in not only making people see your side of things, but also promoting intelligent and free-flowing conversation. Usually, glaring spelling mistakes cause a distraction and confusion in correspondences. Additionally, just because you attempt to avoid making spelling errors and lapses in grammar – doesn’t mean you have the right to criticize others for their poor use of the English language. It is highly suggested to ignore the spelling mistakes of others and concentrate on the way you communicate while online.

Additional email etiquette rules include the avoidance of sending or forwarding junk mail and Internet hoaxes, forwarding virus warnings (which are sometimes hoaxes), replying to all recipients of a collectively sent email, and sending unnecessarily large attachments.

There are also plenty of “netiquette” issues to recognize when communicating with others in online communities (chat rooms and forums). One of the first things to do when joining a chat room, forum, or other online group is familiarize oneself with the rules or guidelines of the service. This practice comes in rather handy and helps one avoid any future online confrontations or misunderstandings.

At all times, your privacy should be protected, as well as other members of the online community. It is unwise to use full names in chat room correspondences and is rude to ask the full names of those you come in contact with. Staying on topic is also a rule of Internet etiquette. For instance, if you have joined a chat room community regarding model airplanes, it is often inappropriate to start sharing your marital problems with others. Using offensive language is warned against and is usually punished (suspension or ban).

When chatting, it is also suggested to keep messages short and present information in the most concise manner. Also, a common practice is to use abbreviations, but not everyone is familiar with the current lingo and this should be kept in mind – the abbreviation of your words and phrases should be used sparingly.

Overall, it is suggested to treat communication across the Internet in the same manner that you like to receive correspondences. Usually, the things that irritate you are the same actions others dislike as well.

Google’s Open Social and How it Will Revolutionize Search Engine Optimization Services. The social networks are becoming very popular not only for every day college kids, but also for businesses. Right now businesses are starting to enter in this network to discover there target markets and increase their business online success.

Find out how you can use Google’s Open Social, along with other social networks, to improve your search engine rankings.

If you have been following the social network arguments and “inner moves” among Google, Facebook and Microsoft, then you should have realized how important Social Networks are these days. People are flocking social networks; search engines, as well as other online companies saw the big potential of harvesting more user trending information from them, as well as the monetary benefits that come from posting advertising text or banners on them.

The Open Social move by the search engine giant, Google can bring about great benefits to online users and programmers. Web social application developers say that it is a great move for Google to open different social networks, and share applications among them. Others say that is very similar to the Open ID service and would greatly benefit users who wish to migrate or transfer their content from one social site to another. While others laud this achievement, others also see that this might be Google’s response to the Microsoft and Facebook advertising tandem which is strongly gaining ground in social networking, in fact it has passed the stage of being just another “hype”; it is now THE trend. Through it all however, Open Social will surely become another milestone in Search Engine Optimization Service.

Google has already been “in talks” with some social networks to fulfill the Open Social requirements, like Myspace, Friendster and LinkedIn. Google is hoping that this will spread like wildfire to other big social networks, with Facebook probably first in line. Google is starting another big revolution; right after it has stirred not just “ripples”, but “waves” online with its pioneering campaign on Adsense. There’s always something great to expect from Google these days. Open Social will definitely be another crowd drawer that can improve search engine rankings.

The Open Social API will provide developers the capability to create working applications that can be used on different social networks, which greatly spell another move to entice other social sites to join in the Google bandwagon. This will certainly change the way social networks function, and will greatly create a whole new impact on search engine optimization services, focused entirely on the social network hype. In another point of view, this will invite a lot of application developers to swarm social networks where they can freely use the Google API to create and reshape different ideas, thus making social networks far more potent networking tools.

The Open Social move will revolutionize online social networks, and will aid in centralizing a typical user’s Google account data across different social networks, allowing for faster access or sign-up. This is apparently a GREAT thing to expect from Google that will have big benefits for web developers and users alike.

If you enjoy using the internet to meet new people online, there is a good chance that you have heard of or even used a social networking website before. Social networking websites are websites that allow internet users with the same interests, views, and beliefs to come together online. In a way, a social networking site is similar to a community or neighborhood. Although there is a good chance that you have used a social networking service before, there is a chance that you haven’t. If you haven’t but you are interested, you will have to find a social networking website to join.

When it comes to finding a social networking website, you will find that you literally have an unlimited number of different options. Social networks have popped up all over the internet. Of course, you can join as many social networking sites as you would like to, but doing so can be tiring and time consuming. Instead of signing up for a large number of social networking sites or the first one that you come across, you are advised to research and examine a particular site. Doing so will enable to find and join the perfect social networking site, at least the one that is perfect for your needs.

As previously mentioned, when searching for a social networking website, you will find that you have a number of different options. One of those options is likely to be FriendFinder. FriendFinder is known as one of the most popular online social networking websites. In a way, they are as just as well known as MySpace or Yahoo! 360. If you are unsure as to whether or not you would like to join FriendFinder, you are encouraged to examine the site. After examining the features, the programs, and the benefits of joining, you may find that FriendFinder is a social networking community that you want to be a part of.

The goal of FriendFinder, as well as many other social networking websites, is to allow you to meet other internet users. With special search features and detailed profile pages, social networking websites allow you to find an individual who shares the same interests, views, or beliefs as yourself. With many network community members posting their pictures, you could also, if you desire, choose a friend based on their physical appearance. Even though it is possible to do, it has led many individuals to misunderstand what FriendFinder is all about. Unfortunately, a large number of individuals believe that it is solely an online dating site.

Of course there are always community members that will meet, date, or even get married. All social networking websites, including FriendFinder, have these types of close relationships. However, FriendFinder is not necessarily classified as a dating website. Although you can choose to date other members if you want, it is not required. In fact, a large number of FriendFinder community members are not looking for a relationship, just an online friendship. This means that you should not feel any pressure when it comes to joining this popular online community.

Speaking of joining FriendFinder, you will also find that you have a number of different options. FriendFinder has a number of different membership plans. These plans start out as free and then increase from there. A free membership plan will allow you to browse member profiles, chat, and send private messages. These paying membership grant you access to top of the line website features.

If you are interested in becoming a member of FriendFinder, whether it be a free member or a paying member, you are enounced to check out the FriendFinder website. That website can be found by visiting www.friendfinder.com. Although nothing is guaranteed, there is a good chance that you will like what you see, as well as meet a large number of community members that you may develop a close relationship with. .
