Social Media Marketing Training – The Two Things That Everyone is Looking For in Social Media

Doug Firebaugh asked:

When you think about it, there are only 2 things that people are looking for in Social Media. It does not matter if you are in real estate, mortgage banking, insurance, or even in marketing of some type. People are always looking for something.

You just need to make sure that you know what those things are.

Most people in the Social Media arena are progressive thinkers and progressive people. Most are ahead of the curve in the web 2.0 world, and most have a focus of being ahead of the pack. The early adopters of Social Media, which I am one, started on the Social media scene 5 years ago. There is not much there, but what was there, was used as best as it could be used.

People then, and people now, are still the same. They always will be. But in the Social media arena, they are looking for 2 things that will help them.

Help them feel better about whom they are. Help them feel better about what they do. And help them feel better about where their life is going. All people are in some way looking for that forward focus. That is why in the social scene, there are 2 things people seem to be seeking more than anything.

Only two.

1) CONNECTION.

Most people in Web 2.0 ville are looking for Connection. They want to connect with people, information, new ideas, new trainings, new events, new groups, new videos, but whatever they are looking for, they want to CONNECT.

Connection is part of the culture we grew up in. People in real estate understand the person want to feel emotionally connected to a house before they purchase it. People want to feel connected to a car before they decide to buy it. And people want to feel connected to something before they start building that bridge of trust with you. You must make an effort to connect in a way that they will respond to in social media.

IN Social Media Marketing, Connection is NOT Correction as so many people think. They are NOT looking to be told that their life is not any good, or is lacking. They are not looking to be told their home is too small for them. They want to Connect to something or someone that will make them feel better about themselves and where their life is headed. You do that in conversations on twitter, Facebook, MySpace, orkut, moli, LinkedIn, and the like.

They want to feel GOOD about a conversation with you, no matter the social network. They want to feel FOCUSED ON and Tied into a conversation that will help them feel more a part of something that can increase and enlarge their life and future.

CONNECTING with people is simply reaching out and taking their hand over the internet and letting them feel PLUGGED IN to something and someone that can help you connect to new possibilities and to new destinies.

THAT is simple and the truth. Keep the Connection authentic and real, and they will listen to what your conversation is about and start drawing closer to you and your message.

2) Elevation.

People want to feel like they are being lifted higher in their life. They want to feel like their life is going somewhere and means something. We all do. We all are looking for that special feeling that we are special, and as trite as that sounds, it is the truth.

What can you do to create that feeling that they truly believe they are walking on air?

Life them up by noticing something g they said that has helped you.

Compliment them.

Give them a kind remark about their efforts in what they are doing in Social Media.

Ask questions they might know the answer to show you appreciate their knowledge..

Send them new ideas on their passion.

Notice something about their conversation that you can totally appreciate and let them know about it.

Empower them with encouragement.

Thank them for learning something from them.

WHY?

It will make them glad they talked to you in Social Media. And they will remember you the next message, tweet, or conversation. They will move from the Awareness stage, to the Appreciation stage in Social Media.

As a realtor, you will see that they can start to trust you, and even start referring possible clients to you as people they know are moving out or into – your area.

Remember- it is NOT what you said. But how you made them feel by Connecting with them and Elevating their hope and future in the Social media Marketing arena.

Blessings…Doug

Using Groups For Business on Social Media Sites

Sean R Mize asked:

There are two ways to promote your commerce using groups. You can join an existing group and join in the discussions and at the right moment promote your product. If you do this too much, you will be labeled a spammer, so it’s not the best way to promote your commerce through a group. Another way, which is very effective, is to create your own group. This provides several benefits to joining an existing group. You can control what segment of your demographics to target with a group topic and you can put up your own advertising in the group without offending anyone.

You don’t want to create a group about a specific product or service you are offering. No one is going to join an obvious ploy to market your wares. Instead, you will want to choose a topic related to your products or services and then use the group to help you promote your commerce.

If you have no idea what might work, simply check out the existing groups on many social media sites. Look up groups that are in your niche market area and see what they are doing to make the group successful. Then, you can take the same approach to help you build a group that attracts members and is successful too.

One of the most important marketing tools for your group will be the name that choose for it. If you choose to name it something bland, it won’t attract much attention. You typically want names that are long enough to promote some interest, but short enough to be catchy so that they will go viral. In fact, T-shirt sayings can best exemplify catchy titles or slogans that might work on group names too. It doesn’t mean you can’t be serious, if you are dealing with a serious topic. But, if you are trying to capture a younger crowd you might want to try something humorous or trendy.

Examples of groups with good names in either the serious or flip categories are:

o Six Degrees of Separation (376,341 members)

o You know you’re from North Carolina when…(21,522 members)

As you can see, it doesn’t really take a genius to figure out a good name for a group.

To advertise your group, you will want to join existing groups and post about it on the wall or join discussion groups where you can announce its creation. Part of social networking is joining in and participating, so don’t expect people to just storm the front door after the group becomes active. You do have to do a little legwork to get people through the door. As the creator of the group, you will be responsible for adding posts and keeping it from becoming filled with spam or hostile posts.

You want your group to have quality and substance so that people will want to join and feel they are benefiting from being there. This will help you to increase the number of active group participants and help you to build a contact list for people who can potentially become your friends on your profile or buyers from the ads you place in the groups.

How Can Twitter Help Me Make More Money Online?

Matthew Bredel asked:

Twitter doesn’t sound like much. It suggests that you tell the world what you’re doing in 140 characters or less. So what? How are people using this social marketing tool to make more money online?

What You Need To Know: Follow and Be Followed!

The key to twitter is to follow and be followed. If you’re on the site talking about what you’re doing to nobody and not finding what anyone else is doing, it’s sort of useless and rather boring. Once you get a few followers and start following a person, that’s when the buzz starts. You can update your status on the web, via instant messaging client or via a third party tool like Twhirl that lets you use twitter from your own desktop. You can follow and be followed on your cell phone as well and be plugged in to the Twitterverse on the go.

You have a profile page that lets you manage the tool and lets people look you up to see what you’re all about in a few lines and with a URL. It’s the “What are you doing” section that counts.
Your Twitter friends or peeps (a.k.a your Tweeps) all carry on conversations with or without you and when you pop in and chime into various conversations, it gets rather lively. People ask questions, answer questions and share URLS of what they’re doing, what they find interesting and what they want opinions on.

There’s also the public timeline that tells you what other people are doing and you can search on that for more followers or conversations to eavesdrop on. It’s like a virtual water cooler that you can stop into during the day and check in with your tweeps.

Use Twitter when you:

-Post an update to your blog

-Want answers to a technical question

-Want to vent

-Want to tell people what you’re having for lunch (seriously, that can sparks some very interesting questions) and more.

You can also send direct private messages as well as respond to people both directly but also publicly. The more interesting of a Tweet you post, the more likely people will follow you and re-tweet. A re-tweet is when you post a URL and someone likes it so they share it by tweeting or re-tweeting it to their followers. Do you see how it can become a benefit to you in an area like affiliate marketing, product launches and technical challenges you need help with?

You can also post Twitter feeds on your website so that people can follow you, read your conversations, see who you’re following and visit their posts or URLS so it becomes a very viral way to share and communicate and even to collaborate.

The downside to Twitter

Not only is the tool currently growing at such a fast rate that it goes down regularly but there is another downside and that’s productivity. Sadly there’s almost always a downside to social networking and bookmarking tools and as with many others, Twitter can be a time waster if you’re not careful so it’s important to use it and have fun but also to set limits for yourself.

7 Free Social Media Marketing Tools (That Shouldn’t Be Free)

Peter Lenkefi asked:

The social media marketing niche is full of hype pipers and hope dopes. Everyday I get a “product launch” email touting the latest WordPress plugin, software app or marketing system, promising BIG traffic or quit-your-day-job ROI.

If you have been around (the internet marketing scene) for even a few months you’ll know just what I am talking about. I am at the point where I am more interested in the way the product is being marketed than what the product is.

I have settled in to a few (mostly free) web 2.0 tools that make my social media marketing work.

So, shut up and tell you what they are already, right? Got it…

VIDEO SYNDICATION

The big gun in video submission is, of course, Traffic Geyser. This is a great service and, besides taking hours to set up and being priced on the high end, works very well at getting you and your silly videos plastered all over the web. However, recently I stumbled upon a free video submission service called TubeMogul that I like quite well, thank you very much.

TubeMogul allows for automated submission to the 12 big video sites all at once. The interface is super-simple. It allows you to add a title, description, tags and category setting to you video. And you can upload as many videos as you want for nada (FREE!).

Check it out at TubeMogul.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA SUBMITTING AND BOOKMARKING

Some of the new folks get confused here so let me briefly explain… Social media marketing calls for lots of “submitting”. One of the mainstays is submitting your post (your story, your article whatever you call your content) to a social media site.

There are really 2 types of sites for post submission. There’s the social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and technorati which just want you to primarily submit a link and tag. There’s not much voting or browsing of these “bookmarks” going on after you submit.

Then there’s the social news sites like Digg and Propeller. These sites want your link and tags also but you will also need to provide a good description of you post and hope that other vote it up.

So, with that out of the way… On to the freebie.

I have used a few of the paid tools out there to automatically submit to both the social bookmarking sites and the social news sites and, in my opinion, the free tool at SocialMarker.com works better than all of them. You just input your post data, check the sites you want to submit to and arrow through the submissions. “That was easy!”

KEYWORD RESEARCH

Yes, I still do keyword research, I think it is important to keep track of your main keywords and look for variations as new topics come up. I use the free tool from the giant keyword service called Keyword Discovery. The free tool works great for bloggers who are not building 10,000 word PPC campaigns.

IMAGE EDITING

By far, the service I use the most is picnik.com. I always have to crop, resize, fix, etc. the images I need to use. This online editor makes it quick and easy.

VIDEO CAPTURE AND EDITING

Well, this may be a bit advanced for the new folks but just in case you are ready to stick your toes into the video pond, here’s a couple of free tools you’ll need.

First, you will need a good screen capture software. I like the tools from TechSmith, either Camtasia (V3 is free right now) or JingProject.

Once you have you fancy screen capture then head over to Jumpcut.com and start editing. This is an awesome free online editing software that should cost big bucks.

So, there you have it…

The list is not long but, trust me, these free tools will get you f-a-a-a-r in your social media marketing endeavors.

You can try lots of other similar free marketing software, tools and systems; there is an endless number of them that’s for sure.

This is what has worked (and continues to work) for me. Enjoy!

Create a video blog…instantly.

Twitter Followers – Is it List Building?

Geoff Dodd asked:

First we need a definition. What is Twitter? Twitter is a social marketing site and an excellent communication tool that anyone can use to post any number of micro-blogging posts, known as ‘tweets’, out to their followers. The micro posts are limited to 140 characters and can contain a URL web address.

Obviously, you need to be brief and concise with Twitter, and not too brazenly there for purely commercial reasons of money making. It is a huge mistake to pitch affiliate products continuously at your list of loyal followers. You are being read and judged by your peers and they can quickly turn on you, removing you from their ‘followed’ list if they feel you are not contributing something of real informational value to them. Remember that most people use The Internet to seek information about a problem area in their lives, such as health or finances.

Think of Twitter as ‘list building’ and you’ll quickly realize that by far the most important thing is to build a trust relationship with your list of followers. There is a real art to providing newsy, intriguing, fascinating posts in blogging and Twitter tweets are exactly the same but much smaller, being limited to 140 characters.

Many successful marketers on Twitter have a feel for the highly topical, news related stuff like Google’s latest Wave communication tool, or Apple’s iPhone 3GS smart phone or another, similarly innovative trend that Twitter has now started to list down the right hand side of the page for quicker access. Twitter’s ‘Trending Topics’ is equally as useful for web marketers, as is Google Trends.

Twitter members can reply to each other in the open space by adding a ‘@’ symbol before a user’s nickname. For example, ‘@geoffnow’ would prefix a reply to the writer. They can also send direct messages into another member’s private inbox. They can ‘favorite’ an update by clicking on a faint star image to the right of anyone’s tweet.

There is a language to learn. A re-tweet is a request for followers to repeat a message out to their own groups of followers. It is usually added at the end of a tweet, like: Please RT, or even ‘pse rt.’ You can imagine many followers not being willing to re-tweet something if it is simply a pitch for an affiliate product. An announcement of great newsworthiness or ‘buzz’ value, or a charitable idea — sure, many followers will agree to re-tweet something like that.

Hundreds of programmers and web developers have now written smart web applications that run alongside Twitter. The writer uses two viral marketing systems that help bring in more followers quickly. These smart web sites use surprisingly simple methods to encourage joiners to follow those at the top of the list. You are given a custom URL to promote the site, so as to accelerate the viral marketing effect. Savvy web marketers will recommend these fast-growth systems to their lists.

In summary, Twitter is a simple, but extremely clever communications web site that marketers are now latching on to very quickly. It allows anyone to build an unlimited list of followers. Web marketers are strongly advised to respect the followers and to provide them with newsy information, humor and added value, before even thinking about pitching a sales message. Pre-selling, such as gift giving, is an essential step on Twitter and on all social marketing web properties. Let’s be truly sociable and entertaining from the outset. Build trust first.

13 LinkedIn Mistakes to Avoid

Suzanne Vara asked:

LinkedIn, the socially connected professional network, has made numerous changes over the past few months to become more thank a job resource. The changes have made it a viable tool for people to connect, discuss, get answers to questions as well as connect with people that they just may be working with in the future. The future of social media marketing is bright and the tools we use today are building blocks for what is yet to come. Creating profiles that are complete and honest are just the beginning. Many of these have been written time and time again but as I look to connect with new people, I still see the same mistakes being made.

13 LinkedIn Mistakes to Avoid

1. Default URL. Increase your personal branding so easily by changing the default to a personal URL. Click Edit Public Profile Settings in the top right and then edit your Public Profile URL to your name.

2. My Website/My Company. Keeping the default is asking people to look above to see who your current employer is and then go back and click on it. It is a simple change: On your profile, click websites, then at the drop down, click “Other” and then type in the name and descriptive terms

3. Private Profile. As social media is evolving with Google’s live search, Bing/Twitter as well as Google’s Social Search what was private is not anymore. Go public so people can find you.

4. Joining Groups. The maximum amount of groups you can join is 50. While that seems like a lot, how many people are at the max? There are so much information to contained within groups – news, discussions, slide shares that failing to join groups is missing out on an opportunity to connect. 50 is not always the easiest to keep up with and connect with all members but the information shared in the groups is very valuable.

5. Lack of Participation in Discussions. Social media is about connecting and building relationships – talking to people. Taking part in discussions gets you noticed as well as keeps the conversation going and the sharing of information, viewpoints and knowledge.

6. Not Asking/Answering Questions. Asking questions and getting feedback from others is not only free, it many times does give you answers that you were seeking. Answering questions allows you to share what you know and build a reputation within your industry.

7. Linking Every Tweet. Pushing every tweet to your LinkedIn status is noise. I am a very big fan of Twitter, on twitter. Having people that I am connected with on LinkedIn to see every tweet is not the proper forum. Selected tweets of articles read and worth sharing, absolutely but every tweet, no.

8. Lack of Company Page. As a business owner, a company page is another way to get found. Create a company page so that people know you are there. There had been some hesitations as each employee that adds you as an employer is linked to you and once they leave, they can speak about the company in a manner that is not consistent with company policy shall we say. Months ago this was a factor but with the social media tools available there is no excuse for not having a company page.

9. Incomplete Profile. Lack of a photo (or updated photo), complete summary and custom title. President does not cut it anymore. People do not search for president, CEO, etc. Your summary is your chance to let people know what you do and how you can help them.

10. Connecting & Then Selling. It is not a forum for a sales pitch. Similar to auto dm’s in Twitter. People who connect with you have to agree and they will look to find out what you do. Sending a thanks for connecting with a sales pitch is asking to be ignored.

11. Not Updating Status. Every tweet is overkill but not updating your status is showing people that you are not active. Inactivity is showing that you are an infrequent visitor. Be active. Let people know what you are involved in, reading, etc.

12. Failing to Comment on Comments. This is similar to comments on our blog. If someone comments, then respond to them. You are asking them to read, they are responding, take time to acknowledge their efforts.

13. Not Giving or Asking or Recommendations. Giving is easier than asking. I do not like to ask for them as I think that if I give one then that is sort of a nod back to that person to maybe give one back. Bad strategy… probably but the importance is to give and then ask.

As you go and look at your LinkedIn profile, look for ways to improve. We are all on limited time and to check this profile, that one and the newest one that comes out is not easy. Staying involved with certain platforms that are making changes is a sign for what is to come.
